Owning or renting the flat does not decide this. A tenant staying for years may be happy with fibre; an owner waiting for renovation work may need a temporary wireless connection. Compare how long you need service, how it can be installed and how it performs at the place you will use it.
| Question | Fibre | 5G home broadband |
|---|---|---|
| How does it reach the flat? | A fixed line and terminal; confirm existing wiring and installation work. | A mobile-network router; performance depends on reception at its position. |
| Will it fix weak bedroom Wi-Fi? | Only if the router and in-home coverage are addressed too. | It still needs to distribute Wi-Fi around the home. |
| Can I move it? | Ask about service relocation, new-address coverage and fees. | The box is portable; the service may still be tied to an approved address. |
| Is cancellation flexible? | Read the minimum term and notice rules. | Read the same rules; wireless does not mean no contract. |
Use the trial for your normal week
- Place the supplied router where it will remain, with safe ventilation. Compare more than one practical position rather than assuming the nearest window is best.
- Test during the evening as well as the day. Run your actual VPN, video meetings, console and streaming apps; note dropouts as well as download speed.
- Connect a laptop by Ethernet for one test to separate the mobile connection from the router’s Wi-Fi coverage.
- If you need remote access to a camera or home server, test it from outside the home. Ask about public IP availability and inbound connections before buying.
SmarTone’s fixed-term contract, clause 2.7, gives eligible first-time subscribers a seven-day trial from service activation; selected promotion plans, relocation and reactivation are excluded. Cancellation requires written notice within the trial period, and refund arrangements depend on returning the equipment. Get the applicable last cancellation date and return instructions before activation. Its subscriber-price device terms also exclude the trial for certain discounted device purchases.
When paying for both can be sensible
If a dropped meeting or failed payment terminal would cost more than a backup, keep a separate mobile hotspot or connection available. Test how you switch to it and whether its allowance is enough for an outage. Buying a faster primary plan does not provide a second route when that connection fails.
For moving arrangements, ask for the new-address process before signing. The telecom contract code published by HKBN addresses relocation and the options when equivalent service cannot be provided. Eligibility and the applicable contract matter; do not assume moving automatically cancels a commitment.
