Do not store everything automatically at the end of term. Compare the cost of keeping inexpensive bedding, hangers or a worn desk chair with replacing or borrowing them later. Keep documents, your laptop and anything needed over the break with you. Storage is most useful for belongings you know you will use when you return.
Confirm the hall dates before buying a package
Ask about checkout, any temporary luggage facility, eligibility, booking deadlines and the next room’s check-in date. Do not assume accommodation continues through summer: HKU’s housing FAQ says summer residence requires a separate application. A storage booking should cover the actual gap, including days before you can collect a new room key.

A per-box price can hide a minimum bill
Hypothetical example: four boxes at HK$60 each per month appear to cost HK$720 for three months. If the plan has a HK$300 monthly minimum and HK$180 final delivery, the total is HK$1,080, even with free collection. Ask whether suitcases count as boxes, whether part-months round up and whether returning empty containers costs extra.
If sharing with friends
Get the provider’s permission and decide who signs, pays and receives notices. Keep separate inventories, agree what happens if one person returns late, and name an authorised person who can collect while others are abroad. Splitting the rent does not automatically split the account holder’s obligations.
Before flying out, test the payment method you will use overseas, save the support contact and book the return early enough for your arrival. Keep one photograph of each sealed box and its label. Your first night back should not depend on a delivery window that has not been confirmed.
