Keep Your Hong Kong Number After Moving Abroad

Choose for account access, not unused monthly data

Your priority is retaining the number that existing contacts and accounts already use. Our low-maintenance shortlist is LuckySIM’s HK$138 / 1,095-day pack; the local data is a single pool for return visits. For lower recurring spend, investigate Club SIM’s small-pack route in the main comparison, including its initial port-in purchase. Neither option guarantees that every bank or website will deliver its OTP abroad.

LuckySIM’s product page lists overseas SMS reception and free incoming local/international SMS. It also tells users to enable data roaming for overseas reception; get destination-specific settings and any charge implications from support before following that instruction. SoSIM’s FAQ says roaming is available by default and describes connecting to a local roaming network with VoLTE enabled. A working SIM and a successfully delivered OTP are separate checks.

A short porting plan before you leave

1. Confirm the old account holder, contract end date, final bill and any early-exit or handset instalments. Keep the old SIM and its ICCID details.
2. Choose “keep my number” with the receiving carrier. Match your identity details exactly and complete its real-name checks. A new-number eSIM order is not a transfer.
3. Receive the SIM/eSIM and agree a cutover date with time to fix delays. Do not cancel the old number yourself.
4. Test incoming calls, ordinary texts and your essential OTPs. Test overseas reception again after arrival, then record the SIM expiry and renewal method.

These steps follow OFCA’s MNP guidance. Its general processing estimate is 1–2 days, but carrier onboarding can take longer: Birdie advises about 7 days. Allow for SIM delivery, identity checks and corrections rather than planning a switch on departure day.

Run the number from abroad

• Save the number, ICCID, account login and renewal receipt somewhere you can access without an SMS to this line. Set calendar reminders 30 and 7 days before expiry.
• Verify your payment method works overseas. Check the displayed SIM expiry after renewing; do not infer success from a payment receipt alone.
• Ask about lost-phone replacement and eSIM reinstallation before leaving. LuckySIM’s checkout says its eSIM installs once and cannot simply move to another device.
• Keep your overseas SIM as the everyday data line. Review data switching, roaming calls, voicemail and forwarding so incidental use does not consume the holding balance.

When you return to Hong Kong

Budget return visits against the whole multi-year allowance. At 5GB per visit, two visits a year for three years use 30GB exactly; there is no buffer. That is our planning calculation, not a carrier usage estimate. If you expect more, keep the number on its holding plan and price an additional local data pack or second SIM.
