Choose by annual visits and data per visit
Count trips, days in Hong Kong and realistic laptop/hotspot usage. Light users can use a long-validity pool; heavier visitors can keep their contact number on one SIM and use a second SIM/eSIM for data. That second line needs compatible hardware, but it lets you change data products without repeatedly porting the business contact number.

Worked budget: four Hong Kong visits per year
Assume an already activated SoSIM, no opening balance, four separated visits each covered by one HK$48 local pack, no other charged use and data auto-renewal disabled between visits. One HK$200 recharge extends the SIM 365 days; four packs deduct HK$192, leaving HK$8. The cash paid is HK$200, not HK$392. This excludes the initial starter/eSIM purchase and any mainland data, calls or extra days.
If those visits need only 5GB each, four HK$25 weekly packs consume HK$100; the same annual recharge still ties up HK$200, leaving HK$100 for later use while the account remains valid. Compare that cash commitment with a low-cost holding line plus separate data. These are arithmetic scenarios using recharge rules and pack prices, not personalised usage predictions.
Using Hong Kong roaming data in mainland China
Some Hong Kong roaming packages route traffic outside mainland China, allowing access to services normally blocked on mainland domestic connections. SoSIM explicitly advertises Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp access in mainland China without a VPN. This applies to the supported roaming service: a +852 number alone, a local-only pack or switching onto hotel Wi-Fi does not establish the same routing.
Before a work trip, confirm mainland coverage, roaming partner, tethering, speed after the allowance and access to the actual tools you need. General social-app access is not a guarantee for every corporate VPN, Google service or region-restricted application. Test critical tools before the meeting and keep another connection available.
How mainland roaming and internet routing differKeep ownership and availability clear
For a company-owned line, obtain the company’s authorised documents rather than registering it casually in an employee’s name. SoSIM’s corporate MNP instructions require business-registration documents, an authorisation letter with company chop/signature, and the representative’s identity details. Schedule cutover outside meetings and test calls and SMS afterwards.
Keeping a number alive does not provide free incoming roaming calls or a staffed answering service. If clients must reach you while abroad, check roaming voice and forwarding costs separately. Put ownership, renewal reminders and recovery instructions in a shared business record accessible to the authorised administrator.
