First decide whether you need a local number
Maps, messaging and browsing are data needs; receiving ordinary calls and SMS at a Hong Kong number is a different requirement. A data-only eSIM may cover the first task but should not be treated as a +852 phone line. For a booking or contact that needs your local number again next visit, choose a product explicitly including a Hong Kong number and keep its account valid.

A simple repeat-visit example: three trips using 3GB each consume 9GB total. A multi-year 30GB pool covers that assumed demand, but its appeal depends on returning before the account expires. For one visit, unused multi-year validity has little value. Use the full holding-cost comparison if keeping the number is essential.
Registration and activation before arrival
OFCA’s registration FAQ says HKID holders must use their original HKID. Visitors without HKID may use an accepted valid travel document; HKSAR and BN(O) passports are not accepted identity documents for this purpose. Register in your own name and check the carrier’s verification process. Buying a card is not the same as completing registration.
SoSIM requires activation within 60 days of purchase; inserting the SIM or installing its eSIM starts the validity clock. LuckySIM’s online pack offers immediate or selected-date activation. Schedule around your flight rather than installing far in advance, and check whether activation can be completed outside Hong Kong for your exact product.

- Record the SIM expiry separately from any data-pack expiry, and keep the ICCID and carrier login.
- Confirm that you can recharge from home using your payment method. Do not rely on a Hong Kong shop visit to renew an account that expires before you return.
- Keep the same SIM/eSIM if you want the same number. Buying another starter normally creates another account; it is not a renewal.
- If you also visit mainland China, buy a pack that explicitly includes it; Hong Kong local GB are not mainland roaming GB.
