Separate a payment problem from a product restriction. Some merchants sell internationally in US dollars; others restrict the customer or billing location. Read the merchant’s own rules before paying for a foreign card, address service or app-store balance. Changing the payment currency does not change who you are or where you use the product.
Calculate the final price
Use: subscription price including tax × the applicable exchange rate + card or payment fees. For illustration, US$20 at an assumed HK$7.80 per dollar is HK$156; a hypothetical 2% fee makes it HK$159.12. A displayed HK$160 checkout is not necessarily cheaper merely because it avoids a visible currency conversion. These are example inputs, not today’s exchange rate or a particular card tariff.
If the merchant offers to convert the charge into HKD, compare the displayed rate and markup. Visa’s currency-conversion guidance explains that merchant conversion can include extra fees and should be a choice. Also read your issuer’s tariff: a transaction billed in HKD can still have a cross-border fee.

Avoid a cheap first month becoming an expensive year
- Check whether the advertised monthly figure requires an annual upfront payment. Compare the cash charged today, not only the average.
- Record the trial end date, renewal price and cancellation deadline. Set a reminder before the charge.
- Before changing billing platforms, cancel the old renewal and check its remaining paid period to avoid overlap.
- If charged without access, keep the receipt and contact the merchant on it. Do not purchase again until the account mismatch is resolved.
