Does my phone support eSIM?
Most flagship and mid-range phones from the last several years support eSIM, including recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S/Z, Google Pixel and many others. On iPhone go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM; on Android look under Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM. If the option appears, you are good to go. Note some phones sold in certain regions may have it disabled, so check before you buy a plan.
How to activate a Hong Kong eSIM
- Buy an eSIM-supported plan online and complete any required identity registration.
- You receive a QR code (and a manual activation code as backup).
- On your phone, choose Add eSIM and scan the QR code.
- Label the line (e.g. “Personal”), set it for data, calls and SMS, and you are connected.
eSIM for travel vs a local eSIM plan
A local Hong Kong eSIM plan is your everyday line with a HK number. A travel eSIM is a temporary data plan for a destination abroad — see our roaming guide for when that beats a day-pass. Which Hong Kong operators support eSIM?
All five major Hong Kong operators and several MVNOs offer eSIM on at least some plans. Use the eSIM filter on the plan list to see only plans that support it.
Can I have an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?
Yes. Most eSIM-capable phones support dual SIM with one physical nano-SIM plus one or more eSIMs active, which is ideal for keeping separate work/personal or local/travel lines.
Is an eSIM as fast as a physical SIM?
Yes — an eSIM connects to exactly the same network as a physical SIM, so speed and coverage are identical. The only difference is how the plan is provisioned onto your phone.
