Single Rooms in Hong Kong Elderly Care Homes: Prices, Availability and What to Look For

Private single rooms in Hong Kong care homes typically cost HK$12,000–25,000 per month depending on care level, but fewer than half of homes publish room-level pricing. Here is what to look for and what to ask.

A single room is one of the most common things families ask about — and one of the hardest to get clear pricing on. Many homes publish only a monthly fee range, without breaking it down by room type. This guide explains what a single room actually costs, why published single-room pricing is patchy, and what to look for when you visit.

What a single room costs

Among Hong Kong care homes that publish room-level pricing, a private single room typically costs HK$12,000–25,000 per month. The lower end is usually a low-care (低度護理) place in a care-and-attention home; the higher end reflects high-care (高度護理) or nursing-home-level support. Single rooms are consistently the most expensive room type at any given home, often costing 50–100% more than a shared room at the same care level.

Why published single-room pricing is patchy

Not every home publishes a room-by-room fee breakdown. Some publish only an overall monthly range on the SWD ElderlyInfo portal (e.g. "HK$6,500 – HK$9,000"), which represents the cheapest shared place through to the most expensive room, without specifying which is which. Homes that submit a full fee-charging table (收費表) to SWD publish itemised accommodation charges by room type and care level — these are the homes where our directory can show a precise single-room fee. Where a home has only published a range, we show that range and label it clearly.

A room category appearing in a fee schedule does not mean a bed is currently vacant. Published pricing tells you what the home charges, not whether a place is available now. Always confirm current vacancy directly with the home.

What to look for in a single room

  • Private bathroom: Not all single rooms have an en-suite bathroom. Ask specifically whether the bathroom is private or shared.
  • Size: Single rooms vary widely in floor area. Ask for the square footage and visit in person — a small single room may not accommodate a wheelchair or a companion chair.
  • Window and ventilation: A room with a window is important for both light and air. Check whether the room has natural light and whether air conditioning is included in the fee.
  • Call bell: Confirm there is a nurse-call system within reach of the bed.
